I really enjoy a great crafty session.
I was recruited for our work "fun committee" a few months back. After our first party, the team figured out that I'm a little crafty so they put me in charge of the upcoming Halloween Party decorations. I've been scouring websites like a mad woman; visited Michael's and the Halloween store to pick up a few items; and I even raided my garage for some of the fall decorations that didn't make it into the house.
I'm almost there, just a few handmade items that I need to finish and the old tree branches from my mom's backyard need to dry.
Then, come Monday...the PARTY IS ON!

There are quite a few farmer's markets in our area but we always seem drawn to this one. It's not huge by any means; however it's our favorite one to visit. They host a harvest festival every year but unfortunately we missed it. It's all good though. This visit was less crowded, no lines, and so much more room to enjoy the activities they offered for children. There is a huge pumpkin patch as well as the christmas tree lot. The girls enjoy riding the tractor out to the field. We experienced it last fall and hope to do it again before the year ends.

Childhood is the world of miracle or of magic: it is as if creation rose luminously out of the night, all new and fresh and astonishing. Childhood is over the moment things are no longer astonishing. When the world gives you a feeling of "déjà vu," when you are used to existence, you become an adult.

Two halloween store trips later and she finally settled in on a a costume. My patience was running a little thin. Her indeciveness was not helping either. She had her heart set on this costume but both stores did not have her size. I could see that she was trying to hold back her tears.
She sensed the irritation in my voice and I knew as soon as the words "Mommy, are you mad at me?" came out of her mouth I needed to check my attitude. Afterall...there isn't going to be another halloween party at 9 years old, right?
On Saturday, as I was helping her get dress for the party, she looked me straight in the eyes and said "This is the best day ever! Thank you for helping me get ready."
And I realized, it just wasn't about the costume and the make-up; it's about experiences and life - and her childhood. The memory of the costume may fade but the time I spent helping her get ready, she'll more than likely remember.
As for the party...she had an absolutely amazing time!

The observer and the do-er.
One watches before joining (and sometimes doesn't join but gets just as much satisfaction watching her little sister do the deed).
The other jumps right in not thinking until she's in mid-activity.
They couldn't be any more different.
I need to remember how to parent each one of them on a daily basis.

Hello Friday!
I'm gearing up for what seems to be a busy weekend in the Holcomb household: halloween party for the little one, girls' day for myself & the teen, a little bit of fall cleaning, some 4th grade memory book prepping, a farmer's market visit, bowling for the man & me, and hopefully some lounging in between. All good stuff.
I have a quick card share from the Fall Cupcards {to go} kit.
This simple card came together really quickly. I pulled out my cuttlebug for the base card and some stickles for the flower and the butterfuly. Love the look of each of those added elements.
This month we had the pleasure of Sarah Webb as our guest designer. Her designs are stunning as is her scrapbooking layouts. For additional card inspiration, visit the Fall Gallery. It's pure goodness.
Happy Weekend!

Although I'm still wearing capris and sandals, I can feel the weather turning just a bit, especially in the evening. I pulled out a few of my favorite fall decorations. Living with limited space really has me thinking about the items that I bring into our home. I've been attracted to natural items lately and looking to bring more of that into my decor.
Simple frame of fall photos, pumpkins in different heights, and a few candles.
This makes me happy.

Happy Wednesday!
Here is another one of my contributions for this months Simple Projects/Simple Pages templates which is now available in the shop.
There was much to do before the first day of school. Fashion wise that is. Fourth grade is a big deal you know. Nyna had a particular request of how she wanted her hair to be styled. Thank goodness we were able to come to a compromise. She has a head full of hair that can take me a few hours (with many breaks in between) to do. As for the school outfit...purple was the color to be worn.
The "first days" of school are some of my best memories too!

breakfast for two please. yes...i would like to do this again. me and him. just us.
while the girls spent the day with my parents at the mall we took advantage of our 'childless' morning to eat, talk, and just be together. i like these moments. they're very rare with all the busy-ness of life that goes on. we talk about going out all the time but time just seems to fly by.
i say no more talking. just do.

I spent last Friday evening making a few more cards to add to my stash. I like having a stack to personalize and give out at any moment.
One of my new favorite sites is a collaboration effort by Sally J. Shim and Joke Vande Gaer called SHIMTOKK. They provide workshops on creative packaging ideas and parties. I've actually followed Sally's blog for quite sometime and love her style.
They recently provided a free download of "Hello" gift tags and I immediately knew that I wanted to use them on a card (or three). I'm so thankful for such creative souls!
Happy Weekend!
